The northern LRT, opened on 7 December 2003, runs for 3.5 km (2.2 miles) miles from Piazzale Maciachini to Parco Nord on the boundary with the municipality of Bresso, and is a complete redevelopment of the corresponding section of the Milan-Desio interurban tramway. The new line serves the Valassina arterial route, on which are the densely populated district of Niguarda and the hospital of the same name. A large part of the northern LRT is on dedicated track and its construction was an opportunity for major urban redevelopment and redesign of the existing road layout, particularly in Via Ornato and north of the historic centre of Niguarda, where space for the double track was recovered by extending the enclosure of the River Seveso by 350 m. One of the most demanding sections of the northern LRT was the railway loop underpass at Piazza Nice, where, to make room for the second track, it was necessary to restore and enlarge the small supporting arch next to the one for the existing track. Another junction which has undergone important changes is Piazza dell’Ospedale Maggiore (General Hospital Square), where the connection between the urban tramway tracks (terminus loop of the old line 4) and those of the LRT provides a new route for trams coming from Viale Ca ‘Granda. The northern LRT has 9 stops: Maciachini M3, Valassina, Nice, osp. Major Girola, Niguarda Center, North Niguarda, Cascina California, North park. The northern LRT has an interchange with the Line 3 in Maciachini.
