Metros

A history of large-scale designs

Metropolitana Milanese was founded in 1955 to study, design and build metro lines and large-scale public transport infrastructure. Originally focusing on Milan, Metropolitana Milanese subsequently decided to use its experience in other cities in Italy and abroad: its name being associated with important projects and studies in urban transportation.

Moving away from the traditional metro, MM went on to design and develop feasibility studies for the construction of LRTs throughout the country. Somewhere between the traditional metro and the tram, the LRTs were introduced in the mid ‘70s to address the increasing congestion problems in growing cities within various medium-sized cities where the figures were not large enough to warrant the construction of large-scale infrastructure. The LRT was the first mode of transport on which full automatic (driverless) control systems were tested. .
