The Brebemi (Brescia-Bergamo-Milano) project involves the construction of a new motorway link between the cities of Brescia, Bergamo and Milan, with a length of about 62 km (38.8 miles), and alterations to the existing road system needed to provide connections with the bypasses for the two main administrative centres. Since 2004, Metropolitana Milanese SpA initially, and Metro Engineering Srl subsequently, have performed verification activities relating to the preliminary and final design. Since March 2009, Metro Engineering has been carrying out verifications on performance of the preliminary activities prior to commencement of work by the main contractor. The construction phase started in July 2009 from which date ME has been performing overall supervision of the technical and construction aspects, administration and accounting, planning and monitoring work progress, and expropriation (compulsory purchase).
