The project involves the construction of an LRT for the Termini-Argentina-Aurelio-Vatican route. MM has in particular been responsible for detailed design of the Piazzale Argentina-Termini section. In terms of transportation, the main purpose of the line is to create a strong west-east axis across the centre of Rome. The line is of new design (track equipment, overhead line, street furniture, rolling stock, technical support systems) and allows the two terminuses to be linked in about 15 minutes compared with the current theoretical 27 minutes. It also allows all the current bus routes along the line of the track (more than 15 in the central section) to be discontinued with considerable benefits in terms of air and noise pollution.
