In September 2008, the Calabria Region appointed the consortium represented by Metro Engineering to define an LRT connection between Cosenza Rende and Università della Calabria. In 2009 the preliminary design this was completed and in 2010 the final design was approved at a local authorities planning conference. The project envisages the construction of a modern tram line with a route linking the various municipalities of Cosenza (on double tracks alongside the pedestrian walkway on Viale Giacomo Mancini), the municipality of Rende (where two single-tracked lines are planned on parallel routes running past the national railway (FS) station) and the Università della Calabria. The LRT, with an overall length of 10.5 km (6.6 miles) and 25 stops, will be narrow-gauge track (0.95 m) in order to integrate with the tracks and equipment of Calabria Railways through a connection with the railway junction at Vaglio Lise.
