The first line in Padua, known as SIR1 (Intermediate Network System 1), was inaugurated on 24 March 2007 on the FS Station - South Terminus route. The system is based on the use of electrically-powered vehicles, running on rubber-tyred wheels but guided mechanically by a single rail. The system adopted is Translohr: a vehicle running on rubber tyres which uses a pantograph to draw electric power from the overhead contact line, like a tram, and with the rear steerable wheels controlled by a trolley running within the single rail. The rail also picks up the return current (negative pole of the driving circuit).
