The Catania-Siracusa regional road starts at the Catania bypass and after a section of just over 24 km (15 miles) reaches Augusta – Villasmundo, continuing without a break to Syracusa as trunk road SS 114. The road has two lanes (3.75 m – 12 ft wide) plus hard shoulders (emergency lanes) (3 m – 10 ft wide) over the whole section. In particular, MM contributed to the creation of the infrastructure with the design of four artificial tunnels, 5 natural tunnels, 12 viaducts and bridges. The motorway forms part of the European E45 road connecting Karesuvanto, Finland, to the Sicilian town of Gela.
