The Precotto depot on Line 1 was built for the maintenance of trains in service on the metro in November 1964, at the same time as the first section of Line 1.
Later it became necessary to build a new tram depot, specifically for the housing and maintenance of modern low floor trams. The issue was resolved with the opening of the Testi - Bicocca - Precotto tramway, which brought the tram network close to the Precotto depot, which was able to accommodate the new type of tram.
The tram depot is located between the metro depot buildings, and consists essentially of one large building, which contains:

  • the tram shed, containing 26 loop tracks, able to accommodate 83 large-capacity trams (length approx. 35 m) or a greater number of short trams;
  • the workshop, with 12 tracks, of which 9 are loops and 3 are sections, specialized for the various maintenance operations: body lift, tracks raised on pillars for access to the underbody and bogies, maintenance of roof equipment, wheel profiling (with pit lathe), etc.
  • a washing tunnel, with loop track.
