Mathematical model of the milan water table

Hydrogeological studies and mathematical modelling

Brief description

Metropolitana Milanese is carrying out a study for the definition of a mathematical model for management of the aquifer as part of the “Programme agreement for control of the water table height in the Milan area,” signed by the Lombardy Region, Municipality of Milan, the River Po Basin Authority and the Magistrate for the River Po (now AIPO - Interregional Agency for the Po River). The flow simulation model has been developed on the basis of the geological framework and the data acquired and processed in the course of the preliminary basic study to define the conceptual model. The area of study includes the City of Milan and 84 surrounding municipalities (about 840 km2). The objective of the study is to produce a decision support tool to help the public authorities calculate the mass balance, estimate water extraction for future planning and issue licences for the use of underground water. At the same time, definition of a numerical model is under way to ascertain the extent of pollutant transportation into the aquifer, for the purposes of defining planning policy for initiatives under the Regulatory Plan concerning wells used for drinking purposes, and treatment of water supplies. The integrated use of a quality model, and not just the flow model, is considered necessary because different pumping schemes, and in general the conditions surrounding the groundwater flow, can also be evaluated in the light of their possible effects on the movement of pollutant fronts in relation to ongoing or potential events.
