In 2003, Metropolitana Milanese, representative of the Project and Construction Management Services for an ATI (Temporary Association of Companies) consortium, was entrusted by Brescia Transport Spa with the task of supervising the works for the Brescia metro system. This is a light metro system with fully-automated guided drive on a dedicated track, known as Metrobus. The line, with a length of 18 km (11.3 miles) (including 7 km - 4.4 miles - in an underground section) and 23 stations, will cover the Prealpino - S. Eufemia section. In the section running through the historic centre it was decided to carry out the excavation work using the modern technique of balanced earth pressure cutting machines, known popularly as “moles”, because they work just like a mole! Still in the planning stage is the Fiera extension from Marmora station. All the stations have safety barriers with automatic door opening on arrival of the trains. The control centre and the line management offices are located within the depot at the S. Eufemia terminus.
