The Turin metro system is a mass public transport system fitted with an automatic guidance system known as VAL (Véhicule Automatique Léger - Light Automatic Vehicle). Its first section opened on 4 February 2006, in time for the 20th Winter Olympic Games. The metro system network currently consists of one line running for 9.6 km (6 miles) with a total of 15 stations. From Spring 2009 MM, through Metro Engineering, will be participating in the design and management of the works for the Porta Nuova-Lingotto section (3.9 km - 2.4 miles - of tunnel and 6 stations). In particular, MM has carried out works management and safety coordination services in respect of both installations and finishing for the stations and line. MM has also developed the executive design of the civil works for three stations (Marconi, Nizza and Dante) and the executive design of the architectural finishing of all the stations. Inauguration of the Porta Nuova-Lingotto extension is scheduled for January 2011.
