Opened on December 7, 2008, the LRT runs between Milan and Cinisello Balsamo, an important centre in the northern hinterland, extending the range of public transport services along one of the major roads into Milan. On its route, the line connects three local hospitals: the Orthopaedic Trauma Centre - CTO, the Multimedica and the Bassini hospital. Half-way along the route is the Parco Nord school. The LRT, totalling 8.7 km (5.4 miles) in length, is divided into two sections: the first 4.5 km (2.8 miles) from Piazzale Lagosta to Via Bignami, is an upgrade of the existing tram system, while the remaining 4.2 km (2.6 miles) from Via Bignami to Via Monte Ortigara in Cinisello Balsamo is a completely new line. During construction of the LRT, a complete overhaul was made of underground utilities and surface layout on the central streets of the principality of Cinisello, with a result very much appreciated by its citizens. The northern LRT has an interchange with the Line 3 and 5 in Zara station.
