After Metropolitana Milanese, appointed by the Province of Milan, had prepared the feasibility study and preliminary design for conversion of the current tramway system along the Milano-Limbiate arterial route into a modern LRT, in 2009 Metro Engineering, acting as the representative of a group of companies, prepared the subsequent definitive design. The project provides for construction of an interurban tram line with an overall length of about 11.7 km (7.3 miles), with a first section of about 7.7 km (4.8 miles) to Milan on double tracks and the remaining section on single tracks with doubling at crossings. The project provides for complete reorganisation of urban spaces by locating the new dedicated line on a central road reservation. The plan also includes rearrangement of the layout and modernisation of the old tram depot at Varedo. The LRT will 21 stops: Comasina, Max Mayer, Molinazzo, Mangiagalli, Ospitaletto, Ospitaletto Nord, Villaggio Ambrosiano, Battiloca, Cassina, Amata, Cascina Secchi, Risorgimento, Molino, Cascina Borgonuovo, Toscana, Mille Genova, Mille Faenza, Cinque Giornate, Monte Bianco, Falterana, Monte Bianco Monte Rosa, Limbiate Ospedale. The LRT will an interchange with the Line 3 in Comasina.
