As part of the Piazza Bottini works, which commenced in May 2008, a pedestrian underpass connecting the Lambrate FS and Lambrate M2 stations has been built, the public transport interchange has been restructured and the entire layout of the Piazza has been redeveloped..

The Piazza was concurrently redeveloped through the reorganisation of the roads, parking areas and areas dedicated to street trading. This was done by replacing street furniture, developing green spaces and upgrading the underground technology networks.

The underpass

The new underpass, approximately 90 m in length, connects the mezzanine of the M2 station with the opposite side of the square and the pedestrian underpass that runs beneath the railroad tracks, enabling passengers to avoid crossing the roads in order to ensure road safety. Shop windows are located along both sides of the passageway offering approximately 340 m2 of retail space to liven up the underpass and make it brighter. The walkways are fitted with tactile routes to alert blind passengers to hazards and changes in surface level, while four travelators facilitate the movement of passengers. Two glass-sided escalators also connect the underpass entrance to the metro line with the underpass exit that passes beneath the area belonging to the railway alongside Via Merzario.

The shelter

A” big wing", designed to mirror the semi-circular shape of the square, covers part of the pedestrian area, creating a protected and advantageous route between the railway station and the metro entrance. Steel and polycarbonate panels form the structure, covering approximately 700 m2. A glass elevator has been installed beneath the shelter connecting the new underpass with the pavement, the existing railway underpass on Via Merzario and platform 12 of the RFI railway station.

The piazza

The Piazza is solely for use by pedestrians and public transport. In order to promote non-motorised transport, cycle-racks have been installed close to the RFI station. Private vehicles are allowed within the perimeter of the square, into which access is monitored by cameras. As part of the regeneration of the outside areas, all of the existing trees have been replaced. This excludes a number of valuable tree species including three cedar trees, which have been relocated: two of which to Piazza Bottini and one to Piazza Gobetti. An automatic irrigation system has also been installed within the redeveloped green spaces. The grassy part of the track will be completed after several weeks of the new tram system being in operation, in order for the tracks to settle and adjust on the ballast.

The square was inaugurated on 15th December 2010.
