The redevelopment of Piazza Duca d'Aosta and Via Vittor Pisani was part of the plan to redevelop the areas in front of and adjacent to Milan’s Central Station, following completion of the work on Line 3.
MM carried out the work using designs by the architects Chambry and Zanuso; winners of the national contest in 1988.
The design proposed installing a pedestrian area spanning the width of the front of the Central Station, flanked on either side by the through roads of the highway network.
Four new rows of trees, consisting of 20 magnolia trees, have been planted in the central area to replace those removed in 1955.
The pedestrian area in front of the station, entirely paved with natural stone, has been furnished with eight large raised flowerbeds and illuminated by 14 ornate monumental street lamps, which were reinstalled after being restored.
The redevelopment of the Piazza has been completed through the installation of stone benches and bollards and the planting of wild flowers.
The pavements along the perimeter of the pedestrian area have been paved with grey Istrian stone, with the curbs and ramps for disabled access paved in white granite.
In Piazza Duca d'Aosta at the intersection Pisani-Galvani-Vitruvio, a large semi-circular flowerbed has been built in the middle of the surrounding highways, named "Exedra" during the planning stage.
